Explosion Safety - Consultancy
ATEX 137 As an employer, owner or operator you may be required to deal with the 1999/92/EC Directive either directly or indirectly. It is often not obvious whether explosion risks exist and people can be unaware of their exposure to such risks unless an external source draws attention to it. Once you have established that these matters impact your business, there are some additional issues involved, where SGS can provide assistance:
For example, it is a legal requirement to:
- Draw up an explosion protection document (Ex - Risk Inventory and Evaluation)
- Perform and implement an area classification (zones)
- Provide training and instruction of personnel exposed to the identified explosion risks
- Coordinate explosive safety issues between (sub)contractors on site
- Initiate design reviews and commission inspections for newly installed equipment
- Monitor technical conditions by means of an adequate periodic inspection program
SGS Industrial Services can not only assist you in achieving compliance with these requirements in order to protect against explosion hazards but also to avoid the regulatory penalties for non-compliance.
ATEX 95 SGS has expert experience in all areas of certification of explosion safe equipment and also offers consultancy services to manufacturers for certification projects, since regulatory bodies are prohibited from offering consultancy alongside their certification activities. As a result, projects submitted to these bodies can escalate in financial terms for reasons of miscommunication, incomplete files and the interpretation of issues in standards, resulting in additional time being needed and extra cost being incurred to clarify and resolve these issues. Lack of experienced staff within these bodies can also cause long lead times and less efficient assessment throughput.
SGS can help to reduce these additional, often unexpected, costs for projects requiring submission to a regulatory body. By possessing an in depth knowledge of the process, SGS can structure and build the Technical Construction File (TCF) during the Research and Development phase to ensure that the TCF is optimized for submission when completed. SGS has extensive certification experience allowing us to work quickly, efficiently and more cost effectively than the regulatory bodies. The cost of taking advantage of SGS capabilities and experience will be more than compensated by the reduced involvement of regulatory bodies and the subsequent expenses, and therefore helps your ATEX certification project to run more smoothly and cost effective.
Additionally SGS will help you assess and independently manage the self certification of all category 3 (zone 2,22) and non-electrical category 2 (zone 1) products.
