The regulation on the classification, labeling and packaging of substances and mixtures (CLP Regulation/1272/2008/EC) entered into force on January 20, 2009, and is based on the United Nations’ Globally Harmonized System (GHS).

The CLP Regulation contributes to the aim of the GHS that identical hazards should be uniformly described and labeled by using global classification criteria and internationally agreed upon labeling elements.

As a result, the current rules on the classification, labeling and packaging of substances (Directive 67/548/EEC) and mixtures (Directive 1999/45/EC) will be replaced. The classification and labeling of substances and mixtures must be completely revised, at the latest on December 1, 2010 and June 1, 2015, respectively.

Although these deadlines seem like a long time from now, companies need to start preparing an action plan to be able to manage its implementation on time.
